According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United States has some of the safest drinking water in the world. And you can thank the water treatment procedures in your local community for contributing to this fact.
The tap water you get from the city you live in is treated with a number of chemicals during the water treatment process.
The CDC says the process includes four distinct actions:
- Coagulation and flocculation
Chemicals play an important role in ensuring the water that reaches your tap is safe. Contamination can still happen, but it's a rarity in the US. You can relax when you know more about the makeup of your tap water.
Typical Tap Water Makeup
The primary use of chemicals in water treatment is to kill bacteria and microorganisms that cause illness. Your tap water makeup after cleansing includes the addition of:
- Aluminium sulphate
- Calcium hydroxide
- Fluorosilicic acid
- Sodium silicofluoride
Are They Dangerous?
In an age where organic and natural are popular trends for healthy living, the addition of chemicals to tap water has come under fire. Despite the fact that chemicals added to tap water purify it for safe use and drinking, health risks are still present.
According to HealthGuidance.org, while the levels of chlorine added to our tap water are considered safe, long-term exposure to small doses of chlorine act as a poison. Research indicates that years of drinking tap water could contribute to an increased risk of cancer, heart disease, and other health conditions.
Bottled vs. Tap
Is bottled water safer than tap water? The water that comes to your tap has been treated with chemicals to purify it. The water you purchase in bottled form is, according to a 1999 four-year review, no more or less safe than tap water. Roughly 25% of bottled water is just packaged and sold tap water. Sometimes, it is treated with even more chemicals than local water from the tap.
Filtering Out Chemicals
The good news is that you can take steps at home to filter unwanted chemicals from water treatment. Carbon filters are used to filter chemicals from your tap water to provide toxin free water while keeping wanted minerals.
There's no denying the presence of chemicals in your tap water. They serve a noble purpose by making your water safe to drink, but a carbon filter can help ensure these helpful chemicals don't cause an increase in health risks due to prolonged exposure.
